Warmachine Saturday Nights

Since I've been doing all this 'oh so fun' business travel, I hadn't gotten much gaming in on a non-computer source.  Played lots of good old Spider Solitaire as well as the electronic version of Race for the Galaxy.  I'm getting better vs. the computer as I am up to winning 1 in 5 vice 1 in 20.

Since I was back, Paul and Eric came over for a few games of Warmachine on Saturday night.

Eric and I played a 35 point game with his Durgen Madhammer vs. my newly assembled Drake MacBain.  I also put into to play Dannon Blythe and Bull, the Bounty Hunters which ended up being the stars of both games.
Eric played a great game, keeping it very close.  He used some primed Nyss hunters to keep a flank in check that I had a full unit of Sam and Devil Dogs w/ a Mule.   Blythe and Bull marked Boomhowler and did a good job keeping them suppressed until they moved in to finish them up.  It ended with Blythe and Bull swarming Durgen as the new mark and hacking away.

Second game was Paul's High Executioner Reznik a few 'Jacks, a full Exemplar Errants w/ UA and the new Errant solo.  I used the Steelheads with Countermeasures to keep the Errants from shooting while having Blythe and Bull pick them off to help secure the flank.  It ended with a giant scrum in the middle with lots of dead Heavy Jacks...  Four I think...  It took the Bokur and MacBain to take down Rez, but it wasn't pretty.

Good games guys and thanks...  Next time I won't make soup! :)

Again with the slow reporting!

On Sunday Steve, Eric, and I got together for some holiday board games.  We started with Race for the Galaxy with the new expansion.  Solid game with I think Steve winning.  Susanne came by while we finished so I taught her the game quickly while the guys scarfed on home made chili and hot dogs.

The second game had Susanne getting some great cards and she played them well for her first game.  In the end it was very close with me eking out a win at the last by one point.

Susanne took off and the three of us played a new game that Eric picked up called Cave Troll, as in "They have a Cave Troll" fame.  :)  It was  a fun little game.  I know Eric was hoping for more PvP in the game, but it was still a good, quick played dungeon crawl type.  I one our game with a solid lead thanks to Steve and Eric beating each other up.

Rob came by just as we finished and he joined in a game of Agricola.  I do enjoy this game, but I need to remember that it doesn't play as fast as I think it does.  I had to pack up an bail at 5 and we were only on round 8 or so which was sad, but the guys pressed on with Steve taking the game after Eric gave him a solid run.

On Monday Steve, Susanne and I took to the road and went to the Star Wars in Concert event in Des Monies.  The concert was pretty good and they had Anthony Daniels as he narrator.  We all enjoyed the show which lasted about 2 1/2 hours or so.  The orchestra was very good as were the chosen visuals.   Afterwards we met TJ and Casey for dinner at Fong's Pizza which is one of the coolest themed pizza places I've been to.  I had a slice of the Thai Pizza that was outstanding.  It was good to see TJ and Casey, but they were off to the late version of the show and we all took off shortly after eating.

This month looks to be a grind at work.  Most likely traveling every week...  Grrrr....

Hope you all get some good gaming in!

Father's Day Race

The eldest and I went to dinner at Hooters and then went and played two games of Race for the Galaxy with the newest expansion.

She spanked me on the first round 80's to 40's...  The new Prestige tokens add a different flavor to the game.  I need to check to see if we are doing the Prestige Leader thingy right.

Second game I won 38 to 37.  It went a lot quicker the first, but I think it was because we were trying to re-learn.

Right now I'm getting my butt handed to me by the computer version.  One win in a dozen odd games...  Grrr...

Race for the Galaxy Players Rejoice...

Two items for Race for the Galaxy...

First the new expansion has been released, "On the Brink", has been released.  I guess it came out a month or so ago and I wasn't paying attention.  While I was waiting at the tournament yesterday I opened it up to start reading, so no unboxing as I ruined the shrink wrap, besides, it is a card game!

This version adds Prestige that can be spent in the game for effects (based on the cards) but also counts as VP so spend wisely.  Coolest card so far is the Death Star type card that allows you to blow up planets of your opponents.

I haven't played yet, but the Eldest and I are going to try it out on Tuesday as my Father's Day present.

The second bit of info is that someone has developed a pretty good downloadable AI for RftG.  Keldon's done a few games, but this one seems pretty darn solid.  So far I am 0-3 vs. the damn machine...  I think it cheats! :)

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

Brrrr....

One of the biggest benefits for being a civil servant is the 'Snow Call' Here I sit, all warm and cozy at home in front of my computer vice being warm and cozy in front of my computer at work. Now, I wish I would have known this before I made the 40+ minute trip to the office so I could go to the gym first only to get the call as I was getting to the gate and having to turn around and drive the 40+ minutes to get back home. Oh well.

Nothing really new on the gaming front. Haven't had the chance to do much since my last FoW game with Paul. The Elder came over to work on some applications and we played four quick games of Giza with me winning the first, her the second, drawing on the third, and her murdering me on the fourth. We then played a quick game of Race for the Galaxy with had me getting a score of 63 points to her 40+. Good game with me building Rebel military plus Imperium bonus cards while she had a lot of the developments that gave you free stuff (cards/vp) for any round.

I broke apart the Grind board game and put together the pieces. It is set up in the basement and I might try a solo round to give the rules a whirl. On Saturday Kyle and I are trying to move the group to a big 'Epic' board game. He has several of the Eagle Games that look pretty cool. The Conquest of the Empire or the Napoleon in Europe could be good ones for a long Saturday night. On Saturday morning four of us are getting together for a four way battle. May even bump it up to 1K all vs. all 20 minute turns for something different and interesting. That would be our own little farewell to MkI event.

More to follow this weekend, in the meantime stay warm and dry!

Saturday Game Action

I got to head over to Steve's a bit early on Saturday to play my last game of the Flames of War Slow grow. It as a good solid game against Steve's Italian Infantry force (1 full platoon with Carri squad in support). I ran the same 600 point list of a L6 HQ (3), 5 L6 platoon, 4 AB-41's, 1 Motorcycle Platoon, and the 20mm AA. Steve used the Infantry to camp on my objective and used the Carri as his assault side. I used my AA on the objective and ran everything else forward. Got some good MG shots on the platoon and assaulted doing well... Except for the 2IC in the Wabbi, that ended up killing four guys + the Company Commander when the L6's finally failed a moral to continue. The Motorcycle Platoon then rolled in, dismounted, and assualted the remaining Infantry platoon, to get to the objective. However, the Carri Squad rolled the AB's and was threating the dug-in AA guns, but just couldn't pull it off. I won, but by an ugly 4-3. It was a solid game and I had a good time playing against Steve as always.

Eric showed up just as we finished and we played tho hands of Race for the Galaxy. Eric was having no luck at all and couldn't get the cards to come out for him. Steve made it a close game on the first one, but I one by a few points with the Galactic Developer. Second game I massed 52 points to Steve's 47 using the Separatist Colony, a solid military build, but the <6> cards for explore bonuses (worth 11 I think) and the development bonus.

We then broke out Agricola which is fast becoming one of my favorite games. Eric and I were running head long with Steve having some resource issues. I played an occupation that limited the player's ability to collect their goods timely which really slowed down their development, allowing me to sprint ahead a bit. With the Sheep Farmer and a fence builder bonus I was able to fill up many spaces, plus the plow allowing me to plow 3:1 actions helped me fill up the board quickly. Close game with me having 38, Eric 32, Steve 9.

Steve's lady friend and her friend came over and we started a game of Talisman. It was the GW 4th edition with the Fantasy Flight add-on. It went pretty well, kind of slower playing then I remember, but I had to bail out near the end as it was getting late.

Solid Saturday of gaming. Good times! :)

Saturday Nuke Con Round Up

Ahoy,

I got to spend all day Saturday at Nuke-Con and had a great time. I had signed up to play La Havre and Dominion early at the con. I've been interested in both of these games for some time, but never had chance to play them. Unfortunately, the guy running these games never showed which was the only downside to the day's activities. Luckily I brought Pandemic (with its expansion) and Race for the Galaxy with me. I played two games of the base Pandemic with a nice guy named Jim since he was suppose to play in the La Havre game as well. We cleaned up pretty well on easy, but lost to the game on medium, with the role combination that we ran being the real stickler.

Around 10ish, the time I was suppose to be playing Dominion, Steve volunteered to sit out of the Flames of War tournament as they had an odd number, so we picked up the Pandemic and added the Viral Strains into the deck for a few games then the Mutant Strain for a few more, and finally both on the final game. We had a few players come and go as we played, what was most likely 6 or 7 games. Good times were had by all as we saved the earth about 50% of the time.

At 2pm, I had signed up to play in Bob's White Line Nightmare home brew using the Savage Worlds engine. It was a 'Car Wars' like game where the players had to race around Council Bluffs and got $500 for hitting designated wickets and $100 for every zombie killed. I played 'Big Sam' an obese, but lovable driver of an armored PT Cruiser with a rocket launcher on the roof. It was a fun game, with the mechanics dragging the game just a tad. By 5pm, of the five players, only one had a working car and was racing around backwards trying to not get swarmed by the Zombies. One was just getting pulled out of his pickup, another had wrecked his sports car going too fast around a curve, and myself and one over were racing on foot to the safety zone. Although I ended the game with the lowest cash prizes (my wickets kept being randomly selected at opposite ends of the table... A mechanic I think needs to me adjusted as others got three wickets right in a row), I had a great time... Just wish Sam could run a bit faster. ;)

At 6pm to about 8pm I ran Race for the Galaxy, and unlike other board game runners, I showed! :) First game was with two younger players that had both played before. They had a pretty solid understanding of the game, with only a few minor reminders (like grey planets do not produce goods). The older of the two kids took the first game by 3 VP over mine. The second game Steve joined in as did a new guy Daniel that had just picked up the game, read the rules and played the 2-player vs. his wife. Daniel did a good job of picking up the parts he missed when you just learn via reading and was soon on his way. I won the game with 47 VP with a brown planet build strategy having both of the <6> brown cards allowing me to double dip the planets.

Afterwards, Steve and I broke out his copy of Agricola and played three games of 1v1. Steve won the first two by health margins and I won the third by a few points. I really liked this game a lot. It falls into that pleasantly complex category, especially when we added in the occupations and the minor improvements as those really changed the complexion of the game and your strategic options.

We finished up around midnight, and I packed up my stuff and hit the road. It was a very pleasant day of gaming and I can't wait for next year!

Sunday Family Gaming

With the Sister and her boyfriend in town we got a lot of board game action in for the night. We played at least four hands of Race for the Galaxy as my sister worked out the finer mechanics. She picked it up pretty well giving a good show at the end of the night. She had the development building <6> and was laying down new developments for a cost of 2 with all her bonuses. That combined with the bonus tiles she ended with 50 while my VP burn strategy got me 51... Close!

We also played a few games of Pandemic which we won the first one on 'easy', lost the second on 'Normal' and won the third on 'Normal'. Those were good, but you could tell folks were getting agitated with having to think three or four turns a head.

We grilled for dinner, lots of veggies from the Farmer's Market plus I had chicken and I cooked them some nice steaks. I had some beets, which I haven't had since I was little, and they weren't too bad. Might have to try again.

I did spend some time in the evening putting together the Space Hulk pieces. Wow... Very nice set. I also ordered the "Space Corridor Game Foam Set" from battlefoam.com. Lots of great pieces. I tried to play the first mission solo (Playing both Marines and Stealers) and it was interesting mechanics. Pretty straight forward and should be interesting with another player. More to follow!

Today is the last day for the visit and they fly back to their homes and I'm back to work.

I'll get you next Bill!

Quick Tuesday recap for me. Turn one... I move Magnus the Warlord forward. Chris moves eMadrak forard. Turn Two I move Magnus the Warlord forward and pop feat. eMadrak moves forward (out of feat) and chucks two power 20 axes at Mag's head. Mag's dies. Very sad. Well played Chris, but you suck. :)

On Thursday, I had Norm, Danyelle, Bill, A.J., and the Elder over for dinner and Race for the Galaxy. I was running late from work so the Elder and I made a quick stop for groceries and then headed home to cook, luckily most of the gang was running late too. (Defective Gamer Genes again!). I made a turkey roast cooked in teriyaki sauce. What I didn't know is that Bill has a really bad allergy to Sesame seeds and the teriyaki is loaded with sesame seed oil. Bill ended up in the ER, Norm dropped him off and came back. We played a five hand RftG with Norm winning with a military strategy and the Eldest having a strong second with about three six development cards. Bill called and had his meds to take care of his 'Save vs. Death' and Norm went out to get him.

Game two was a six handed game. The newest player (his game two), AJ did a great job of playing some good cards, couldn't say really what his strategy was, but he and Danyelle ended up tied for VP and he won on cards. Then, like any good victor, A.J. had to blow out to get back home to Sioux City.

Game three we went through the new combat rules, but it never came up in the game. Bill won with the Galactic Builder. That with the Interstellar Bank he was pulling in two cards every Dev phase and dropping 6 point cards for 2 or 3 alot. Easy victory.

At around 1130 or so My Sis and her boyfriend made it over so we rapped up the games and sat around and BS'ed for a while. They took off and I ended up cleaning the kitchen until about 1ish.

It was a good night, except for almost killing Bill.

My Sister goes to GenCon...

Pretty rainy day here in the Big O. We were suppose to go participate in a MS Run 5K, but it was down pouring all morning so being the fair weather walkers that we are we swung by, got the t-shirt, and grabbed some breakfast. :)

I played a few games of Race for the Galaxy solo version and did pretty well, far better then my average by taking 3 of 6 games. I've updated the scores since my road trip to Boston and they are in the same file for those that can't get enough math.

While at dinner at the Mediterranean Bistro, my phone rang from my little sister. We were just about to eat, so I let it go to voice mail, figuring I would give her a ring afterwards. I would recommend the Bistro by the way. Very good food, even for my little pouch. My sister said in her voice mail that they were having a good time at GenCon (they being her and my old college buddy Vern/Julian/JC) and that she missed me (ahhh!), and if I wanted JC's unpunched Axis and Allies game before he traded it off. I called back to let her know that I still have my old version of A&A, as well as the Shogun that JC and I purchased together while in college, so he could trade it away as needed. I'm sure I'll talk with her next week to see how the experience went for her, especially since she really isn't a gamer.

I'm going next year to GenCon. I'm making the commitment know so I can start the planning early. It is just the way its going to be! :)

Boston Day IV - No Chowda for you

So, here I am in Boston and I haven't had any 'Chowda'. What is the world coming too? Wednesday Night I had dinner with The Other Half's sister and her husband. We went to the historic Union Oyster House, the oldest running restaurant in the US. The company was great. Had a wonderful conversation with the sister-in-law and her husband about the kids, their get away house in New Hampshire, the upcoming trip for The Other Half to Europe with their parents. Good stuff. The food... Well... It was OK, but not a WOW factor by any means. It was loud and the wait staff while polite was very slow. I made major blunder and ate either too fast or something didn't sit well and I did get sick for the first time. After we left the restaurant we walked for 10 minutes while I was in serious pain, but then I found a deserted trash can and let it go and felt 100% better. It was freaky. The three of us walked out to the harbor and continued talking. Other then getting sick it was a good evening.

Class today was a discussion on Intellectual Property and Risk Management among other topics. I pointed the teacher to techdirt.com, which is a great site on IP, privacy issues, and other geeky news. If you follow the IP discussion, regardless of your view point, it is worth having in your daily scans.

Dinner tonight I took the instructors advice and hit a a place called Kaze Shabu Shabu. I had not heard of a Shabu Shabu before, but being a sucker for Japanese cooking in general (Still waiting for an invite to Gyoze night at the Rief house... Hint, Hint!), I thought I would give it a go. Wow. This one was good. It is basically a Japanese version of fondue, but for me, just the good parts... A few tasty veggies and meat. Each person gets a personal pot to cook their meat. I had chicken with some seafood, mainly scallops, salmon, fish cake, and some white fish. You throw it into the pot to let it cook usually veggies first to let them cook the longest, then a piece at a time of the thinly cut meats. Great sauce as well that you could make spicy to taste. In the end you make a broth that is tasty after all the stuff you've ate has cooked. If I was staying another night, I would most likely do this one again.

RftG update on solo play. Robot 7, Me 3. Stupid Robot.

I got cleared to play some D&D on Saturday since I'm getting back early and I've made a Dwarf Invoker for the game since Rob is running his campaign. Should be interesting. I'll post later this weekend on Thron and his exploits.

Boston Day II

The SANS course continues the fire hose approach. Today we discussed some delightful topics as attack vectors, Defense in Depth, and Access Control.... MMMmmm... Access Control... The good part it is Richard Northcutt that is teaching the class and the man is a very entertaining speaker.

Last night I went 1-3 with RftG vs. the robot. I'll update the stats later. I hate that robot.

For dinner I went down to China Town (Short walk) and had a very good spicy seafood soup. The fish, shrimp, scallops, tofu, and crab were all good. The squid was OK, but the octopus was a bit tough, especially for my pouch. I did sneak some kimchi, even though I shouldn't be having any leafy veggies at the moment, but it was good. We shall see what it does to my system.

To treat myself (not sure for what) I went to the biggest of corporate schmucks, Starbucks, and got a no nothing coffee for desert.

Looking forward to dinner tomorrow and getting home early.

Solo Race

I've been playing a ton of Race for the Galaxy solo... Well, if a single game is 1/16th of a ton, then I guess it is a ton. Using the new home worlds, I've been trying to beat the game's 'robot' on easy. I think I am missing something or I'm a bad player. I'm only winning about 1 in every 4 games versus the automatic opponent.

The updated stats can be found on the spreadsheet. It isn't real pretty. Don't think I have hit every combo of homeworlds, but some are just easier then others to win against (or loose against). I like Galactic Developers. The extra card every development phase is a great starting benefit. If you can get the other Development boosts, you can become a <6> card laying down machine. If you have Investment Credits, the <6> with a -1 Development and have the new Crash Research that allows you to discard it for a -3, then you can get the new <6> for free on your turn, actual +1 with the Galactic Developers in your hand.

I'm taking a training course next week. Thank you Department of Air Force. I'm taking RftG in tow to fill in the non-study times.

I'm going to miss gaming tonight as it is my last night home for a bit and next week as I have to take the cert exam on Saturday in Boston. On the 15th the guys are running a doubles Flames of War event so no sweet, sweet D&D action for me then either. I've placed by quarter on the table for the 22nd and hopefully that will work out.

Last Tuesday was great for Warmachine at the Shoppe. We had eight players (nine really) and quite a bit of action. Good times. Thanks to Dan and Adam for showing up on their vacation day. I'm still trying to place appropriate leverage on Adam to put in his PP application. When the store expands we should have enough room for a Saturday or Sunday event to complement the Tuesday event. Plus then we can tag team the tournament.s So Adam... How's that application going? :)

I'll try to update from Boston.

On your mark, get set, Race!

Fellow Galactic Feigns,

I am finally getting a chance to discuss the new Race for the Galaxy expansion, Rebel Vs. Imperium.

Short Version:

It is a great expansion that adds a lot of new items, most of them excellent, some of them middle of the road. A must buy for a RftG addict.

Long Version:

RvI adds in several new functions in the game, mostly through inventive mechanics to existing game play. First up, the game expands, allowing upto six players. The new player cards are a nice purple color with some interesting aliens.

To accommodate the new player numbers, the developers have added three more home worlds, giving the game a total of 12. First up is the Rebel Cantina. A few interesting items with this home world. It is the only non-military Rebel world and it gives you the ability from the Contact Specialist, but with out the negative. This allows a rebel strategy sans the military. Reinforcing that is the Production special that gives you a card for every rebel world in your tableau.

Galactic Developers is the next home world. For a starting card it might seem weak, but the free draw on any development, stacked with the other nice development cards in the deck and you can quickly earn more cards on a development then you spend. Using the right <6> cards and you hit the Jackpot.

Finally is the Impeirum Warlord, not the best name for a 'home world' but what the heck. The additional vision early on is always a boon, plus the early military could lend itself to the same strategy one would expect from the Separatist Colony, but with the added bonus of being able to get a extra bonus versus the rebel worlds.

In addition to the three new home worlds, the developers have tweaked the starting rules. Now you separate the home worlds into odd/even (red/blue) and each player gets one of each pile. They then get their six starter cards and can decide which home world to use, the other being discarded along with the extra cards from the player's hand. I like this start because it gives you a better chance of not getting stuck with junk... Not that it doesn't happen, but it will help minimize those 100% junk hands a bit.

The most widely known feature of the game is the attack mechanics. Traditionally the players had not interaction between their tableau once cards were played, RvI changes that, but only under strict guidelines. First off, only four cards out of 180 in the deck allow you to attack across the tableau's and each of these a unique qualifier to allow you to conduct the attack.

The Imperium Seat allows the player to attack another player that has at least one card with the Rebel keyword.

The Rebel Alliance is the opposite of the Imperium Seat as it allows you to attack another player with at least one card with the Imperium keyword.

The final card, of which there are two copies in the deck allows the player to discard it from their tableau to attack a player with at least a +1 military.

The attack mechanism seems to be pretty straight forward once you figure it out. Instead of settling in the settle phase, the player declares an attack. The attacker nominates a combat planet (red) and each player totals up their military, with the defender getting a bonus of the defense (planet value). If attacker is greater, they take the planet, if not the attack fails. In addition the game recommends alternating the use of the mechanic between games. To be honest this is my biggest gripe on the expansion. It seems such a minor and trivial add since it is so specialized that it would be hard to build a strategy around it. I assume that future expansions will adequately fill out the mechanic.

Finally, here are a few cards that I think added to the game.

Pan Galactic Research is the first <6> Development that does not have a random victory point count, but fixed value of 4. I think that is because it is a dozy of a card. +2 vision and +1 keep alone are great cards, but adding in the reduction cost to developments can allow the right strategy to drop developments at a -4. Additionally the 2 cards per production phase is huge as it allows you to take advantage of almost every phase, but the real kicker is the fact that your max hand size is increased to 12 cards, giving you more flexibility. All around sweet card!

The next card isn't so 'special', but it provides an example of the new Explore power. They funky symbol on phase one allows players to draw cards directly into their hand, then discard any that are required. Previously you had to keep the drawn cards separate, now you can mix them and toss the trash. This power shows up in a lot of cards which is a nice feature.

To wrap up, I liked many of the new cards and powers as I think they added to the game tremendously. The attack mechanism seems very limited in the current state, but I expect it will get better in the expansion.

If you like RftG, then RvI is a good investment.

The one where I play a snot load of games...

Well, what a difference a healthy weekend makes! I don't think I had much rest for the past two days.

Saturday morning, The Other Half and I participated in the Run for Justin 5K event. We walked, obviously, but still had a great time and did better then I thought we would. We finished in under an hour (56 mins and some odd seconds) so about a 3 mile per hour pace. It was a good start to some more aggressive walking. It was funny that we each started pushing each other to catch the next walker group or stroller gaggle ahead of us.

Saturday night was some serious D&D action. The gang was all present and we completed four encounters, including a nice trap room...

Splug, a goblin thief, looked into the room. It was common, almost too common. A couple of statues of ugly humans sitting on tall petastiles on opposite sides of the room. Some stairs directly across the 20' room headed down and a door was on the far side down the 40' feet or so. It seemed too quite as he moved across the room, looking for anything that didn't fit. He glanced behind him to see the elf ranger, Sliver, slip in quietly after him and take up position in the corner by the door, his bow pulled and ready to respond. The dragonborn warlord, the only way Splug could tell them apart was the armor, Zarzathor wore chain and plodded noisily to the stairs to cover the approach. The other dragonborn, this one a nasty paladin named Kaznak wore plate and moved forward to support. Finally Eldacar the halfing, who was no thief in Splugs book and the old man Zoltan, a magic user of some skill moved in... They all stood well behind Splug.

Convinced that nothing was going to happen, Splug made for the opposite door. That is when the walls and floors began to spin and Splug found himself tumbling down a slope in a much darker area. His eyes quickly adjusted to the darkened room and a pit was going to be his future destination if he didn't slow down... That was when he saw the first long and slimy tentacle coming out of the pit.

The adventures were stunned. The entire floor rotated up and sent Splug to places unknown. In his place large charnel rats and ridden the rotating floor up to the new position. It was quick work, but ensuring that the trigger was not switched and moving to get an attack was tricky. Finally Sliver noticed the scrape marks on the wall and spotted the faint impression of the trigger on the far side of the portion that rotated.

Splug soon found himself caught in the grasp of the fell beast, an eater of carrion, it didn't seem to mind that Splug was alive. With some effort Splug twisted and contorted his way out of the foul creatures grasp and squirm his way up the sloop.

Kaznak and Zarzathor jumped the trigger areas on the floor and together heaved the heavy statue on the wall to the floor. As it slammed onto the trigger device, the floor and wall began to rotate, rolling the statue to the edge and wedging the trap open.

Splug again found himself falling, this time into a dirt floor, surrounded by carnel rats, but it was better the the beast that was raising from the pit. Light from above showed his comrades, at least some of them had found a way to get him free. Arrows and flames reached around him, eliminating the rats with ease.

Eldcar leaped up onto the wedged wall and worked his way into the dark. He thought to himself that the damn goblin would be the death of him for sure. He slid down the slope a bit, it was awkward as it wasn't level at any angle, that is when the full beast appeared from the pit. Multiple tentacles, a wide round mouth in the center of its body with row after row of razor sharp teeth. It was an Otyugh of some sort, had to be, nothing could be as ugly as that and not meet the descriptions. It crawled toward Eldacar whipping both of its tentacles in an attempt to grab him. The pain hurt, but it could be worse. Eldacar glanced up the slope and saw both Kaznak and Zarzathor moving in as well. The warlord was shouting orders, wanting to retreat, but the rest of the party was having none of it.
Like I said, it was a pretty good night. We had some level ups at the end of the night and folks are progressing along nicely.

On Sunday The Other Half and I did some errands to include prepping for a garage sale (Yippee...) and had an early lunch. I bolted to the Shoppe as we were having a going away party for Becky. It was a great gathering, about 80+ folks at time. Lots of food and a good time. Becky cried from the moment she walked in to at least when I left. The highlight was her and Angie going all Office Space on the old printer. Having worked their it was a real sucky printer.

While at the Shoppe my copy of the new Race for the Galaxy expansion came in. Being the crack addict that I am, I talked Steve, Rob, and Eric to play a few rounds. I'll do a full review later, but we played three games.
  1. Steve took the first game with the Development strategy. He had 35 points after getting five or six <6> cards out.
  2. I barley took the second with a VP burn. I had 44 points, 20 from VP. Eric was close behind with 40 using the new military powers. He would have won if he got the conquest of Rob's world, but it missed in the end.
  3. Finally game I won pretty strongly. I had the Separatist Colony and some great early cards that let me put down some heavy Rebel worlds.
Good weekend. Just wish that I didn't have to go back to work.

Thursday Night Board Game Action

After some tactical Pestering, I got Steve and Eric to come over for a few board games on Thursday night. First off, big thanks to the guys... I needed the diversion. Also a big sorry. I know I was starting to get to the end of my battery life near 10ish and I think I just abruptly ushered you guys out with out much of a thanks. So... thanks again!

We started with Pandemic. Three handed went pretty good and we cured all the viruses on easy, but didn't get the eradication down before the lost outbreak. Steve had the Medic, Eric the Ops guy, and I had the Scientist. For the second game, The Eldest joined us and we played a four hand. I had Medic, Steve had the Dispatcher, Eric the Scientist, and The Eldest the Researcher. We won this one as well, but it was very close as we only had a few cards left in the player deck.

We broke out Race for the Galaxy next and played a four handed game. The Eldest smoked us as she had a strong military build with the Imperium and the Rebel bases. I had a good 2x VP build (10/ turn with three resources), but started too late and she quickly placed items to end game before I could generate too much VP. The Eldest retired in the lead and Steve and Eric and I played one more three hand. I didn't have snot for cards and Steve had a strong Military strategy. Eric did have a good Development concept, but the <6> cards just were not showing up for him. Steve took the game handily with Eric in second.

PP has pics out for the latest in Retribution. I'll post on those later.

The Drought Ends...

Steve and Mark were all prepared for their respective activities on Saturday so they were able to sweet talk there ways over to help out a friend in dire need of a gaming fix.  We played three rounds of Race for the Galaxy that went pretty well.  It was Mark's first time playing and all the associated baggage that comes with learning, but he did pretty well.

Game 1: Mark started with a bit of military and tried to develop a strategy as such.  It went pretty well, but didn't get any supporting <6> cards.  Steve and I were both working on colony builds, but I was able to get a bit more out in the <6> cards to help pull out a win.  This is one of the few games I played were zero VP were taken from the pool as we only had one consumption power on the board.  Weird.

Game 2: Mark again tried the military build route, but it was much more forced and it didn't fair well. :)  I was working on a 2x VP wash repeat that I got kicked off pretty early having the 2 goods -> 3 VP in play.  Steve was working something similar, but didn't kick in the x2 VP until the turn after I started and it hurt his total collection.  We ended the game with all VP pool being gone, with my VP count being higher then Steve's.

Game 3: Mark tried a different approach, having Old Earth as his home world.  At the end of the game he started to see the finer points of the interactions between the cards, but it was a bit too late.  Steve did the <6> build strategy, having three of them from the start of his hand, including the -2 Dev card.  He was plopping them down for three cards pretty fast.  I had New Sparta and went military having a few military cards in the initial draw.  I did stumble upon New Galactic Order that helped with the VP.  Steve and I tied with 40 points and even tied the tie breaker with goods and cards in hand!

We ended about 1030, I was tired and my pain meds were wearing off, but it was great that they came by for a game or three.  Thanks guys!  Most of the guys are playing the Flames of War Annual Memorial Day event at The Game Shoppe, hope that goes well.  I may sneak out and see a movie with the Eldest if she ever wakes up.

Nuke Con Game Day Back Brief

Greetings,

I spent the day at Nuke Con's Aftershock at Papillion South High School playing a variety of games. I signed up to run a few games that had a different set of participants.

  • Race for the Galaxy - Two new players so it took us about an hour and a half to get through the game. Still good and gave Mike and Gabe a chance to try out something new that stretched their notion of a game.
  • Pandemic - Played twice. Once with Mike Edmond, Elizabeth, and myself. The outbreaks took us pretty early as we had a huge chain reaction in Asia. Second game we added Steven, which caused us to use all five characters, but only get one card to start. We were rocking along, had victory in our grasp, when we got the last two epidemics in a short order that exploded Asia (again!) and we lost do to lack of virus cubes.
  • Formula D - The new version. First game Mike, Steven and I played the newer street racer game. Steven took a health conservative view to some dangerous curves, and was able to zoom ahead at the end to win the two lap race. Second game we played the traditional Formula Racers and I took this one (Only game I won all day I might add!).
  • Thurn & Taxis - I didn't have this on the schedule, but I brought it because it is the best game of 15th Century German Postal Service every created! I challenge you to find a better... Can't be done. Steven did a great job of managing the flow and dominated the final VP count 41-27-8.
  • Mexican Dominoes (Las Cruces Rules) - Ann set up to play some dominoes and after three false starts :) we got rolling along. Game had seven players... Ann, Steve, Susan, Steven, Becky, Lilly, & Me. I've played Mexican Dominoes a ton, but Ann's Las Cruces' rules were a tad different. I liked some aspects like being able to voluntarily keeping your train open, but didn't care for not being able to play on any open position until your own train was out. I think that takes a few of the 'dumping' strategies away from the players. Regardless, it was still fun and I think I ended in the middle of the pack. Ann took it on the last round with her closest peers getting really bad hands to finish up. Good fun. I look forward to it again at Nuke Con. :)
Had a good time, a bit noise at times, but given that this supports the High School gaming club, which I never had growing up, I suppose that is OK. Anything that gets the kids started on their addictions early is A-OK with me. :)

Stern! Why he is nothing but...

Didn't do much today.  Weather was bad out and we really didn't get much accomplished except groceries.

I did play four solo games of Race for the Galaxy.  I wish there was an on-line version I could tap into.  I went 3-1 which is pretty good for me.  Here is a quick look at how it broke up:
  • Game one was Doom World vs. Robot's Damaged Alien Factory.  I won 29 to 24 using a VP build, which is usually pretty dangerous aganist the robot as it can usually out produce you.
  • Game two was New Sparta vs. Epsilon Erandi.  Robot won 31 to 20.  I tried to beat the robot at getting planets out, but didn't have any thing to back up the scores.
  • Game three was Speratist Colony vs. New Sparta.  I won this game 41 to 39 using the military build strategy and New Galactic Order to get VP for military.
  • Game four was Anchient Race vs. Epsilon Erandi.  I took this one as well 46 to 33 with a strong Alien and New Galactic Order sweep.
New updates on the totals can be found here at the link.

I also spent sometime painting my War of the Rings while having Heavy Metal on in the background.  I hadn't seen it in years and it was pretty cheesy.  It seems many of my long time 'favoraties' are a bit cheesy now that time has passed.  Funny how that works.

The unit that I am working on is my favoriate unit for the WotR Dwarves, the Ered Luin Rangers, and they are all but done.  The unit is finished and I'm touching up the command section with some details as they were conversions from other plastics.  The painting isn't great, but it will do for tabletop.  I'll post a pics later.  What makes Ered Luin Rangers so good?  Ambush and Master Pathfinder.  They can get on the other side, behind the lines.  I'm thinking of adding Gimli to the mix so I can 'Toss the Dwarf' as well as throw axes before the charge!

Not my type of game...

Mulch.

It isn't a very fun game.  Especially when you have 11 yards.  How much is a 11 yards of mulch?  It is as much as you can fill in a truck about this size, or an other words, a snot load.  Yesterday from about 2pm and again today from about 5pm The Other Half and I spent most of that time loading the wheel barrel and moving the mulch to the back, then spreading it around.  I am really glad that The Other Half is helping, because it would have slowed me WAY down if I had to load, dump and spread.  We are just over half way there and hope to get it done tomorrow night as the T-storms are working there way in over the weekend.  Either way it has got to get done and soon, I'm not sure my knees can take much more of it!

I did get two games of Race for the Galaxy in with the Elder.  The first game we tried the optional 'drafting' rules in the back of the expansion.  In this version you get two home worlds to choose from and you create a custom deck that you use for your pull and discard piles.  It took a lot longer to set up.  The Elder took the game 37:33 with this version.  She had a rapid build going on with a strong rebel flavor.  I was 'trying' for a run on the '6' cards, but didn't get enough bonus points for them.  The second game we played regular.  I got the Galactic Resort (2 goods for 3 VP) and the 3 point alien world (Toy Shop?) that gives you 2 VP for its good.  I x2 VP twice to take 20 VP, plus used the Merchant World to discard for 2 additional VP.  Took that game 39:23 I think.  I got a good lucky draw that allowed me to place it into play pretty quickly.

That is it for now.  I'll post more later if I get any games in this weekend.
